Subject/Title of Window: Patriotism
Brief Description of Subject: St. George and dragon-Cold War era. One of three windows located high over alter. Patriotism depicts a man raising a sword against a dragon to protect a woman and two children who watch. Most windows in the Alumni Memorial Chapel are sets of three on the same general topic with the same donor. This window is grouped with Religion (101a) and Brotherhood (101b). Described as a cold war period piece, it is valuable to observe the treatment of the word “patriotism”. In this period where examination of the “isms” (fascism, communism, capitalism, socialism, etc.) was a scholastic style especially in the area of political science, the artist apparently wished to separate the suffix, “ism” from the root, “patriot” so as not to disclude the theme “patriotism” in his work, but to give leading attention to the spirit of the “patriot”.
Condition of Window: Good
Type of Glass and Technique: Antique or Cathedral Glass, Lead Came, Vitreous Paint
The MSGC is a constantly evolving database. Not all the data that has been collected by volunteers has been sorted and entered. Not every building has been completely documented.
All images in the Index are either born-digital photographs of windows or buildings or are scans of slides, prints, or other published sources. These images have been provided by volunteers and the quality of the material varies widely.
