Subject/Title of Window: The Crucifixion

Brief Description of Subject: This is the second of three windows located on the south wall of the transept. They picture scenes of Jesus' ministry before the Crucifixion, the Crucifixion, and after the Crucifixion, respectively.

In the center of this rose window is the scene of the Crucifixion picturing a kneeling Virgin Mary and the Apostle John. Rays of Divine light from a cloud (heaven) are highlighting the crucified Christ.

In the six crescents surrounding the central scene are symbols of events that occurred during Holy Week through the Resurrection. Counterclockwise starting at 1 o'clock:

A Rooster, crowed after Peter's third denial of Jesus. Matthew 26:74 - 75.

A Chalice, used by Christ at the Last Supper. Matthew 26:27. There is a legend that Joseph of Arimathea used this chalice to catch the dripping blood of Christ at the Crucifixion.

Money bag and thirty coins of silver, the money Judas received from the high priests to betray Christ. Matthew 26:14 - 15

A scourge pillar and scourge, used for the flogging of Christ as ordered by Pilate before handing him over to be crucified.

Sponge containing  gall and wine vinegar, offered to Christ to drink at the crucifixion. Matthew 27:48. A ladder, used by Joseph of Arimathea to take Christ down from the cross. Mark 15:46.

White shroud draped on a cross. In Good Friday services, at the death of Jesus, a black shroud is draped over the cross. It remains there until Easter morning when a white shroud replaces it to symbolize that "He has risen."

The MSGC is a constantly evolving database. Not all the data that has been collected by volunteers has been sorted and entered. Not every building has been completely documented.

All images in the Index are either born-digital photographs of windows or buildings or are scans of slides, prints, or other published sources. These images have been provided by volunteers and the quality of the material varies widely.

If you have any questions, additions or corrections, or think you can provide better images and are willing to share them, please contact donald20@msu.edu
