Subject/Title of Window: St. Elizabeth of Thuringia

Brief Description of Subject: Decorative medallion at the top contains a radiant red crown topped with three lilies. This medallion is identical to the medallion in the St. Vincent de Paul window that is located opposite this one in the transept.

St. Elizabeth of Thuringia (1207 - 1231) was the daughter of King Andrew II, King of Hungary, and was married off to Louis IV, Landgrave of Thuringia, at the age of 14. Throughout her life she was devoted to the caring of the sick and the poor. She is best known for the "Miracle of the Roses" --- she was secretly taking bread to the poor when she was confronted by her brother-in-law who thought she was stealing from the treasury and demanded to see what was hidden under her cloak; when she opened her cloak there was nothing but roses.

St. Elizabeth is seen costumed as a royalty with a crown on her head and her hands supporting a bouquet of roses.

Inscribed at the bottom of the window is the name of the donor. From archival material the donor was given as "Christian Mother's Coffee Circle"; that would mean that the K.K. in the inscription stood for "Kaffee Kreis".

Inscriptions: Gewidmet vom Christlichen Mutter Verein K.K.

The MSGC is a constantly evolving database. Not all the data that has been collected by volunteers has been sorted and entered. Not every building has been completely documented.

All images in the Index are either born-digital photographs of windows or buildings or are scans of slides, prints, or other published sources. These images have been provided by volunteers and the quality of the material varies widely.

If you have any questions, additions or corrections, or think you can provide better images and are willing to share them, please contact donald20@msu.edu
