Brief Description of Subject: Scene based on the last part of Luke 2:7 "and she brought forth her first born Son, and wrapped Him in swaddling clothes and laid Him in a manger, BECAUSE THERE WAS NO ROOM AT THE INN.

Comments from "Our Stained Glass Windows" c. 1970 "We see the Virgin and St. Joseph being denied accommodations at the inn, The moon conveys the idea of night and rays of the inn-keeper's lantern, as he holds it aloft in one hand in order to scrutinize the two seeking shelter. The inn-keeper's other hand is raised as if to say: 'sorry, but there's no room'. The keys, hanging at his side, identify his vocation."

This is the third of the twelve Holy Family Windows located in the Epistle Aisle. Comments from "Our Stained Glass Windows" by Aloys Frank Herman c. 1970 "This battery of windows along the north wall tells the story of the Holy Family from the time of the Annunciation to the Coronation of the Virgin Mary.

In order to avoid producing that much-to-be-abhorred dark church, the windows along the north and south walls were designed to be rather light in color, yet sufficient color is incorporated to tell the story and tell it beautifully. This objective has indeed been satisfactorily attained."

These windows were designed by Jonathan Edwards as a free lance job for Willet Hauser Architectural Glass and installed in 1969.

Jonathan Edwards worked for Celtic Studios as a designer and glass painter. He also worked freelance for other studios and taught at Swansea College in Wales until the 1990's. His work is found mostly in churches across south Wales but can also be found in Canada and the United States.

The MSGC is a constantly evolving database. Not all the data that has been collected by volunteers has been sorted and entered. Not every building has been completely documented.

All images in the Index are either born-digital photographs of windows or buildings or are scans of slides, prints, or other published sources. These images have been provided by volunteers and the quality of the material varies widely.

If you have any questions, additions or corrections, or think you can provide better images and are willing to share them, please contact donald20@msu.edu
