Brief Description of Subject: The story at the top, "Birth of John the Baptist Foretold", as well as the inscription, is found in Luke 1:5-10 (KJV). Zacharias, a priest, is offering incense in the Temple when the angel Gabriel appears to him and tells "thy wife Elizabeth shall bear thee a son, and thou shall call his name John. And THOU SHALT HAVE JOY AND GLADNESS, and many shall rejoice at his birth." Since his wife is beyond childbearing years, Zacharias is doubtful of this and asks for a sign. Gabriel answers "behold, thou shall be dumb, and not able to speak, until the day these things shall be performed, because thou believest not my words."
The scene below, "Circumcision of John the Baptist", as well as the inscription, is found in Luke 1:59-66. Elizabeth has given birth and "on the eighth day they came to circumcise the child; and they called him Zacharias, after the name of the father. And his mother answered and said, Not so, but he shall be called John. And they said unto her, There is none of the kindred that is called by this name. And they made signs to his father, how he would have him called. And he asked for a writing tablet, and wrote, saying, His name is JOHN. And they marveled all. And his mouth was opened immediately, and his tongue loosed, and he spake and praised God." John is seen with his attributes --- walking stick and clothes made from coarse camel hair.

The MSGC is a constantly evolving database. Not all the data that has been collected by volunteers has been sorted and entered. Not every building has been completely documented.
All images in the Index are either born-digital photographs of windows or buildings or are scans of slides, prints, or other published sources. These images have been provided by volunteers and the quality of the material varies widely.
If you have any questions, additions or corrections, or think you can provide better images and are willing to share them, please contact donald20@msu.edu
