Subject/Title of Window: Arts Window 2
Brief Description of Subject: This window is found in the Luther Lounge. In the early days of the church, the church fostered the arts by hiring or commissioning artists to produce visual or audible form to relay the message in the Scriptures to the masses who were, for the most part illiterate. They could then hear the music and songs, and see Bible stories and characters in paintings, sculpture, woodcarvings and in print, etc. Thus the windows represent from left to right; painting, architecture, and sculpture.
The symbols seen in the shields:
Lion --- In the Old Testament would symbolize the "righteous" (Proverbs 28:1)
In the New Testament would symbolize "Christ" (Revelations 5:5)
Chalice --- Symbolizes "Holy Eucharist"
IHS --- Iota Eta Sigma, the first three letters of the Greek spelling of "Jesus"

The MSGC is a constantly evolving database. Not all the data that has been collected by volunteers has been sorted and entered. Not every building has been completely documented.
All images in the Index are either born-digital photographs of windows or buildings or are scans of slides, prints, or other published sources. These images have been provided by volunteers and the quality of the material varies widely.
If you have any questions, additions or corrections, or think you can provide better images and are willing to share them, please contact donald20@msu.edu
