Biography: The elder George Payne was an artist of reputation, having been one of the principle artists at the Clayton & Bell Studios in England. He came to this county and established a studio of his own. He worked on windows in Grace Episcopal Church and St. Patrick's Cathedral in New York City. George Hardy Payne succeeded his father George Payne in 1890 at Orange, NJ. He incorporated The George Hardy Payne Studios in 1910. The business grew to 86 employees by WWI. His son George Leslie Payne was associated with Payne Studios. George Hardy Payne inaugurated many benefits for his employees including group insurance.
