Subject/Title of Window: Come unto me and I will give you rest

Brief Description of Subject: Jesus is the central figure, seated in midst of the world teaching and with his great invitation, “Come unto me...and I will give you rest.” (Matt.11:28). Surrounding symbols represent his life and work: seven stars representing New Testament churches, Alpha and Omega representing Jesus as the first and last, vine and branches representing Jesus as source of life, clusters of grapes his life-giving ministry and symbols of Holy Communion. On left: minister with Bible, young man with diploma entering full time church vocation, young woman with scroll learning for life of Christian service; On right: blind woman, elderly man, crippled man represent Jesus’ ministry of healing and caring for common people. Left bottom circle: parable of the sower, seed and soil (Matt. 13:3-8). Right bottom circle: “Behold, I stand at the door and knock” (Rev. 3:20). Built to place the central figure of worship, Jesus Christ, at the forefront of the sanctuary. In this window Jesus is sitting in the midst of world teaching with an invitation: “Come Unto me... and I will give you rest.” (Matthew 11:28). Around Jesus are seven stars (Revelation 1:16, 2:1) representing the New Testament churches. Four Cherubim look to Christ in adoration. The Alpha and Omega, the beginning and ending letters of the Greek Alphabet, are to the left and right (Rev. 1:8). Throughout the window are vine and branches (John 15) an analogy used by Jesus as the source of life to his followers. The cluster of grapes signify Christ’s life-giving ministry and are symbols of the Holy Communion. Three figures on the left are as follows: a minister with the Holy Bible in his hand as he directs attention to Jesus Christ; a young man with a diploma in his hand ready to enter a full time church vocation; and a young woman, scroll in hand, dedicated to Christian service. A Candle represents “Christ, the light of the world” (John 8:12). A bell at their feet is a symbol of Christ’s call “to come.” Behind the figures are American and Christian flags.

The MSGC is a constantly evolving database. Not all the data that has been collected by volunteers has been sorted and entered. Not every building has been completely documented.

All images in the Index are either born-digital photographs of windows or buildings or are scans of slides, prints, or other published sources. These images have been provided by volunteers and the quality of the material varies widely.

If you have any questions, additions or corrections, or think you can provide better images and are willing to share them, please contact donald20@msu.edu
