Brief Description of Subject: Apostle John holds book and quill of evangelist. Eagle represents John’s gospel, in which he “soars as if on eagle’s wings to the heavens.” Chalice is a symbol of an attempt to poison John, serpent/cross is a symbol of Moses in the wilderness and crucifixion. John holds the book and the qull of the Evangelist. In the background is an eagle representing his gospel as well as a serpent and cross which represents Moses in the wilderness. At the bottom is a chalice with a serpent. This represents an attempt that was made on John’s life through means of poison.
