Brief Description of Subject: The eight south windows represent the development of Protestantism, especially the Methodist Church and Methodist higher education at Adrian College Main figure: Dr. Asa Mahan, Congregational minister and foundeer of Adrian College in 1859. Flaming torch with broken chains symbolizes Mahan’s work on abolitionion movement, coeducational higher education, and other issues. Historic North Hall at upper right. Images of three wars, first graduation in 1861, first woman graduate in 1864, first theological literary Society at Adrian, and first issue of Adrian College Recorder. The main figure is Dr. Asa Mahan, Congregational minister and founder of Adrian College in 1859. The flaming torch with broken chains symbolizes Mahan’s struggle in behalf of freedom of slaves,coeducational higher education, and other issues of his time. A picture of historic North Hall is at the upper right. From the rich history of the College, selected period representations of student life are depicted, including the impact of three wars, the first graduation-1861, first woman graduate-1864, first theological literary Society at Adrian, and first issue of Adrian College Recorder. As George Eliot has written, “Some call her memory and some tradition, and her voice is sweet with deep mysterious accords.” Thus may know her as “Dear Adrian, Alma Mater.”
