Brief Description of Subject: The eight north windows represent the development of Christian beliefs and the Christian church prior to the Reformation. Lower section: St. Augustine (354-430 A.D.) and city of Hyppo. Left: symbols of three major Protestant leaders influenced by Augustine: Luther’s Rose (Lutheran),, Calvin’s Heart (Presbyterian), Aldersgate Clock of Wesley’s experience (Methodist). Symbols of Augustinian concepts that affected Western Church, especially Protestant churches: Philosophy of History (God, Christ, Last Judgment); Time (God not subordinate to cosmic time and order); Original Sin (Adam, Eve, Serpent); and Prredestination (God, fountain of life and man’s salvation) In the lower section is depicted St. Augustine (354-430 A.D.) and the City of Hyppo. On the left are symbols representing three majors Proestant leaders, all of whom were influenced by Augustine. These are Lutheran (Luther’s Rose), Presbyterian (Calvin’s Heart) and Methodism (the wellknown Aldersgate Clock of Wesly’s experience). The design of the window illustrates certain symbolic interpretations of concepts expounded by St. Augustine which affected the Western Church and, Particularly, the later born Protestant Churches. These include Philosophy of History (God, Christ, Last Judgment), Time (God not subordinate to cosmic time and Order), Original Sin (Adam, Eve, Serpent) and Predestination (God, Fountain of life and man’s salvation. Main figure: Francis Asbury (1745-1816 A.D.) standing in pulpit with Bible in right hand. Building is Captain Thomas Webb’s sail loft in New York City at 120 William Street, rented by Methodists in 1767 for their services. Medallion: Thomas Coke and burning candle, symbol of knowledge. Coke influenced founding of Cokesbury College (1787) by American Methodists, their first venture into higher education. Circuit rider is Peter Cartwright, symbolizing the men who spread Methodist movement across American continent. Features St. Augustine (354-430 A.D.), city of Hyppo, Luther’s rose, Calvin’s heart and Wesley’s Alderslgate Clock.
