Subject/Title of Window: The Reformation in England

Brief Description of Subject: The eight south windows represent the development of Protestantism with emphasis on the Methodist church and Methodist higher education at Adrian College. Archbishop Cranmer (1489-1556 A.D.) of Canterbury, central figure, shown writing as chief author, Book of Common Prayer. Left: Tower of London, Traitor’s Gate, flames and smoke, symbols of Cranmer’s martyrdom. Two figures holding hands: Sir Thomas More and his friend, Erasmus of Rotterdam, symbolizing humanist aspect of Reformation in which reason was to supplant superstitution in religion. Lower: title page of prayerbook and grapes and wheat as symbols of communion in two kinds, urged by Cranmer.
