Building Name: First Baptist Church

City: Ferndale

Window Shape: 4 (rounded or rose window)

Subject/Title of Window: Rose window

Brief Description of Subject: A rose itself is a symbol of messianic hope, love and the Lord while the number of petals, 8, recalls regeneration. In the center is a descending dove , the Holy Spirit, at the time of the baptism of Jesus. Above the head of the dove is the Nimbus in three which is symbolic of the trinity and the tree elements of man: Body, Mind and Soul. The Cherubim around the octagon signifies the immediate presence of God. The fleur-de-lis is a sigh of royalty of Christ as the King of our Lives. The Acanthus leaves represent the gardens of paradise and the tree of life. In the outer circle are symbols of the four evangelists. The wined man is a symbol for St. Matthew, which is in the square that represents the first Gospel of the human genealogy of Jesus. The winged Lion represents St. Mark. The winged Ox is a symbol for St. Luke. The winged eagle represents St. John. These symbols form a cross, and each of these symbols are located in a square which is a symbol for the four Gospels.

The MSGC is a constantly evolving database. Not all the data that has been collected by volunteers has been sorted and entered. Not every building has been completely documented.

All images in the Index are either born-digital photographs of windows or buildings or are scans of slides, prints, or other published sources. These images have been provided by volunteers and the quality of the material varies widely.

If you have any questions, additions or corrections, or think you can provide better images and are willing to share them, please contact donald20@msu.edu
