Brief Description of Subject: Left top: Sword and Three Scallops (James the Greater)-Acts 12:1ff Left bottom: Pilgrim Hat and Staff (James the Greater)-These symbols refer to James’ journeys to establish the church in Spain. Right top: Eagle (John)-This symbolizes John, the writer of the gospel, whose writings, like the eagle, took him to sublime heights-Revelation 4:7 and Ezekiel 1:5ff. Right bottom: Serpent issuing from a Cup (John)-Tradition says John survived the poison given to him in a cup. Top cross: Anchor Cross-an early Christian symbol suggesting Christ as our hope and our sureness, a fitting symbol for the “Fishers of Men”.
