Brief Description of Subject: Left top: Battle Axe (Matthias)-The battle axe is believed to have been the instrument used to behead Matthias. Left bottom: Stones and Open Bible (Matthias)-These two symbols pertain to the building of the Kingdom of God through Christ. Right top: Harpooned Fish (Simon)-This symbol suggests the work of the apostle as a successful “Fisher of men”. Right bottom: Saw (Simon)-Tradition says that Simon was sawn asunder in his martyrdom. Top Cross: Ankh Cross-Of early Egyptian origin meaning “life-giving”. The Christians adopted this cross to symbolize everlasting life.
