Subject/Title of Window: Jesus Taking Leave of His Mother

Brief Description of Subject: Jesus taking leave of his mother as he goes to Jerusalem to meet his fate, is the fourth of seven windows on the Epistle side of the Church. Each features one of the Seven Sorrows of Mary.

The devotion to the Seven Sorrows of Mary dates to the 13th Century with the seven men that founded the Servite Order. Although Mary suffered more than seven sorrows, the seven they chose became fairly standard. The Sorrow selected for this window is not one of the standard.

This non-scriptural event is found in "The Meditations on the Life of Christ" (1308) by Pseudo Bonaventura Chapter 72 --- "Most beloved Mother ... the time of Redemption is coming. Now all things said of me will be fulfilled and they will do to me what they will."

This Sorrow became the opening scene in many Passion plays. In paintings of this subject, if an additional figure is added, as in this rendition, it would commonly be Mary Magdalene or the Evangelist John as they would later be present at the foot of the cross.

The photo of the watercolor done by the Loire studio is reversed from the actual window --- most likely this was mistakenly done when it was originally printed. Less likely is that the window was installed backwards or the Church had the artist make the change before executing this window.

The MSGC is a constantly evolving database. Not all the data that has been collected by volunteers has been sorted and entered. Not every building has been completely documented.

All images in the Index are either born-digital photographs of windows or buildings or are scans of slides, prints, or other published sources. These images have been provided by volunteers and the quality of the material varies widely.

If you have any questions, additions or corrections, or think you can provide better images and are willing to share them, please contact donald20@msu.edu
