Brief Description of Subject: This is the first of two windows located in the St. Joseph Shrine. Pictured is a stylized lily flower. The lily flower could symbolize several different attributes of Joseph --- his purity and as a just man.

Purity: A white lily as a symbol of purity predates Christianity. It can be found in both Greek and Roman Mythology. Joseph's attribute of purity comes from Matthew 1:24 - 25, "he took his wife, but knew her not until she had borne a son." (RSVCE).

Just Man: A lily as a symbol for Joseph as a just man is found in the "First Vespers, Vigil of St. Joseph, Husband of Mary." Based loosely on Hosea 14:5 and referring to Joseph,, "The just man shall blossom like the lily. He shall flourish for ever in the courts of God." Joseph is described as a just man in Matthew 1:19, "And her husband Joseph, being a just man and unwilling to put her to shame, resolved to send her away quietly." (RSVCE).

The MSGC is a constantly evolving database. Not all the data that has been collected by volunteers has been sorted and entered. Not every building has been completely documented.

All images in the Index are either born-digital photographs of windows or buildings or are scans of slides, prints, or other published sources. These images have been provided by volunteers and the quality of the material varies widely.
