Building Name: Congregation Shaarey Zedek

Artist Name: Robert Pinart

City: Southfield

Window Shape: 2 (rectangle)

Date of Window: 1962

Subject/Title of Window: 10 Commandments

Brief Description of Subject: Located in the Chapel, this window's columns are inscribed with the Hebrew numbers 1 through 10 --- representing the 10 Commandments. Each letter in the Hebrew alphabet is also a number, the first 10 letters are the first 10 numbers. Inscribed on the column on the right are: alef (1), bet (2), gimel (3), dalet (4), he (5), and inscribed on the column on the left are: vav (6), zayin (7), chet (8), tet (9), and yod (10).

The arrangement of five Commandments on each column reflects that in the Jewish version the first five Commandments are your relationships with God, while the last five concern your relationships with other people.

Except for the inscriptions of the numbers of the Commandments in the columns, the left half of the window is a mirror image of the right half.

This window was fabricated by the Cummings Stained Glass Studios, Inc.

Note the sculpture between the two columns also features the Hebrew numbers 1 - 10.

The MSGC is a constantly evolving database. Not all the data that has been collected by volunteers has been sorted and entered. Not every building has been completely documented.

All images in the Index are either born-digital photographs of windows or buildings or are scans of slides, prints, or other published sources. These images have been provided by volunteers and the quality of the material varies widely.

If you have any questions, additions or corrections, or think you can provide better images and are willing to share them, please contact donald20@msu.edu
