If a church chooses to have the Gospel writers in stained glass, they will most often be placed, as here, in the sanctuary with two on each side of the altar. This comes from Revelation where four winged creatures surround the throne of Christ. These creatures became associated with the gospel writers by Bishop Iranaeus in the 3rd Century.
Mark is pictured reading a book --- an attribute of a writer of scriptures.
Below the word "SAINT," is a cross --- symbol for Christ and the Christian Faith.
Below the word "MARK" are the Greek letters Chi(X) and Rho(P) which form a cristogram as they are the first two letters in the Greek word for Christ.

The MSGC is a constantly evolving database. Not all the data that has been collected by volunteers has been sorted and entered. Not every building has been completely documented.
All images in the Index are either born-digital photographs of windows or buildings or are scans of slides, prints, or other published sources. These images have been provided by volunteers and the quality of the material varies widely.
If you have any questions, additions or corrections, or think you can provide better images and are willing to share them, please contact donald20@msu.edu
