Building Name: All Saints Episcopal Church

Studio Name: Lamb (J. and R.) Co.

City: Detroit

Window Shape: 3 (arched)

Subject/Title of Window: The Holy City

Brief Description of Subject: Description of this window from the Lamb Studio:

This window
"illustrates the last of the series on the northern side of the nave, culminating in this window over the balcony.

The other windows have covered the last three messages of the churches from Revelation.

The inscription at the bottom is from Revelation 21:5, 'Behold I make all things new.

The symbol of God the Father in the form of the eye and triangle with the clouds and the rays of light form the apex of the window.

In the center of the window is the four-square City of Revelation --- 'the New Jerusalem, coming down from Heaven", with a great wall and twelve gates.

Below is the tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil (to balance the double Tree of Life on the opposite side). This is the tree of Eden, the first heaven --- 'for the first Heaven and the first Earth were passed away.'. Rev.21:1.

At the bottom are Adam and Eve and the serpent surrounded by bird and beast and fish in the first Paradise."
At the bottom left is the name of the artist, Katharine Lamb Tait, and at the bottom right the name of the maker, the J.&R. Studios of Tenafly, N.J.

Note that in the sketch of this window by the artist, the apex contains the five-point star of Jesus rather than the eye of God. On the South side of the balcony is the "The Lamb of Mount Sion" window which was originally to be the last of the series on the north side of the nave. Evidently the church decided to switch their places. The only change needed from the sketch was in the apex.

The MSGC is a constantly evolving database. Not all the data that has been collected by volunteers has been sorted and entered. Not every building has been completely documented.

All images in the Index are either born-digital photographs of windows or buildings or are scans of slides, prints, or other published sources. These images have been provided by volunteers and the quality of the material varies widely.

If you have any questions, additions or corrections, or think you can provide better images and are willing to share them, please contact donald20@msu.edu
