Subject/Title of Window: The Nativity

Brief Description of Subject: This is the second of three windows located on the north wall of the transept. They picture scenes leading up to the birth of Jesus, the Nativity, and Jesus before his ministry, respectively.

The center of this rose window combines the versions of the Nativity as found in the Gospels of Matthew and Luke. The Virgin Mary, dressed in her traditional blue, is kneeling by the Christ Child in the manger. Christ, seen with his cruciform nimbus, is raising the "orb and cross," symbolizing his authority over the world. Behind Mary is her husband Joseph holding a budding staff, a symbol that he was selected by God to be Mary's husband. To the left of them are the shepherds that had been told by angels that the Savior was born in Bethlehem that day.To the right, the Magi who had journeyed to pay homage to the newborn King. Above them is the star that had directed them to this location.

The MSGC is a constantly evolving database. Not all the data that has been collected by volunteers has been sorted and entered. Not every building has been completely documented.

All images in the Index are either born-digital photographs of windows or buildings or are scans of slides, prints, or other published sources. These images have been provided by volunteers and the quality of the material varies widely.

If you have any questions, additions or corrections, or think you can provide better images and are willing to share them, please contact donald20@msu.edu
