Subject/Title of Window: Scenes of Jesus' Ministry Before the Crucifixion

Brief Description of Subject: This is the first of three windows located on the south wall of the transept. They picture scenes of Jesus' ministry before the Crucifixion, the Crucifixion, and after the Crucifixion, respectively.

The scenes are in chronological order starting at the bottom. All quotes are from the NRSVCE Bible.

Scene 1: Jesus Calls the First Apostles. Matthew 4:18 - 20.

"As he walked by the Sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers, Simon, who is called Peter, and Andrew his brother, casting a net into the sea --- for they were fishermen. And he said to them, 'Follow me, and I will make you fish for people.' Immediately they left their nets and followed him."

Peter is the one climbing out of the boat. He is often, as here, pictured with tonsured hair. This comes from the story in the Golden Legend that pagans in Antioch shaved his hair --- this style is sometimes referred to as "Peter's tonsure." His brother Andrew is seen holding a net.

Scene 2: The Transfiguration. Matthew 17:1 - 6

"Six days later, Jesus took with him Peter and James and his brother John and led them up a mountain, by themselves. And he was transfigured before them, and his face shone like the sun, and his clothes became dazzling white. Suddenly there appeared to them Moses [holding the tablets of the commandments] and Elijah [holding a scroll, the attribute of a prophet], talking with them ... Suddenly a bright cloud [place where God dwells from Exodus] a voice said, 'This is my Son, the Beloved; with him I am well pleased; listen to him!' When the disciples heard this, they fell to the ground and were overcome."

Scene 3: Jesus' Triumphal Entry into Jerusalem. Matthew 21:1 - 11

Before entering Jerusalem, Jesus has his disciples get a donkey for him so that he may enter riding on a donkey to fulfill words by the prophets [Zechariah 9:16] that said, "Look your king is coming to you, humble, and mounted on a donkey." As Jesus entered Jerusalem, "A large crowd spread their clocks on the road, and others cut branches from the [palm] trees and spread them on the road. The crowds that went ahead of him and that followed him were shouting, 'Hosanna to the Son of David! Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord! Hosanna in the highest heaven!' "

Scene 4: The Last Supper. Matthew 26:17 - 30.

Jesus and his disciples gathered for the Passover meal. Jesus shockingly announced that one of them would betray him. They were horrified, and one by one they denied it was them. "Judas, who had betrayed him, said 'Surely not I, Rabbi,' He replied, 'You have said so.' " Judas is pictured in this window at the end of the table, looking away from Jesus and holding a money bag.

"While they were eating, Jesus took a loaf of bread, and blessing it he broke it, gave it to his disciples, and said, 'Take, eat; this is my body.' Then he took a cup, and after giving thanks he gave it to them, saying, 'Drink from it all of you; for this is the blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins.' "

Scene 5: Gethsemane. Mark 14:32 - 43 and Luke 22:39 - 47.

The window illuminates verses in capitals.

Mark 14:32 -34 "They went to a place called Gethsemane; and he said to his disciples, 'Sit here while I pray.' HE TOOK WITH HIM PETER, JAMES AND JOHN, and began to be distressed and agitated. And he said to them, 'I am deeply grieved, even to death; remain here, and keep awake." Luke 22:41 - 47 "THEN HE withdrew from about a stone's throw and KNELT DOWN, AND PRAYED, 'Father, if you are willing, remove THIS CUP from me; yet not my will but yours be done.' THEN AN ANGEL FROM HEAVEN APPEARED TO HIM and gave him strength. In his anguish he prayed more earnestly, and his sweat became like drops of blood falling down on the ground. When he got up from prayer, HE CAME TO THE DISCIPLES AND FOUND THEM SLEEPING, and he said to them, 'Why are you sleeping? Get up and pray that you may not come into the time of trial.' " Mark 14:47 "Immediately, while he was still speaking, JUDAS [WITH TORCH], one of the twelve ARRIVED; and with him there was a crowd with swords [SPEARS] and clubs, from the chief priests, the scribes, and elders."

The MSGC is a constantly evolving database. Not all the data that has been collected by volunteers has been sorted and entered. Not every building has been completely documented.

All images in the Index are either born-digital photographs of windows or buildings or are scans of slides, prints, or other published sources. These images have been provided by volunteers and the quality of the material varies widely.
