Subject/Title of Window: On the Road to Emmaus

Brief Description of Subject: The window portrays a quote from Luke's story of two disciples on the road to Emmaus (Luke 24:13-35) -- "Now on the same day (the day of the Resurrection) TWO DISCIPLES were going to a village called Emmaus ... they were talking with each other about everything that had happened. As they talked and discussed these things with each other, JESUS himself came up and WALKED ALONG WITH THEM. He asked them 'What are you discussing together as we walk along?' THEY STOOD STILL, THEIR FACES DOWNCAST."

Synopsis of rest of the story: Not recognizing him, they explained that Jesus of Nazareth, a great prophet, had been crucified and they were sad as they had hoped he was the one who would redeem Israel. Jesus chides them telling them about all the prophesies in the Old Testament about the Redeemer. They stop for dinner and when Jesus breaks the bread and offers it to them, they finally recognize Him as Jesus.

This is the fourth of a battery of 12 windows located along the wall of the Gospel side aisle. Comments from "Our Stained Glass Windows" by Aloys Frank Herman c.1970. These windows tell the progressive story of “Our Lord from his Resurrection to the Descent of the Holy Spirit upon the Apostles”.

These windows were designed by Jonathan Edwards as a free lance job for Willet Hauser Architectural Glass and installed in 1967.

Jonathan Edwards worked for Celtic Studios as a designer and glass painter. He also worked freelance for other studios and taught at Swansea College in Wales until the 1990's. His work is found mostly in churches across south Wales but can also be found in Canada and the United States.
