Subject/Title of Window: To Feed the Hungry-Elizabeth of Portugal

Brief Description of Subject: From Faith in Stained Glass Saint Andrew Church booklet by Michael Bell, published August 15, 1976.

At birth this princess was given the name of her great-aunt, the more famous Elizabeth of Hungary. She was soon nicknamed "The Peacemaker" within the kingdom because her birth reconciled the warring factions of the Portuguese royal house who were quarreling over the succession. Although a queen, she led a quiet, retiring life much to the dismay of her husband. After the king's death, she entered a convent of the Poor Clares, the society of women modeled on the ideal of St. Francis of Assisi. Although she never took formal vows, she is shown in this window dressed in the habit of the order distributing bread to the Poor. She is one of the patron saints of Portugal.
