Subject/Title of Window: Christ the Friend of Children

Brief Description of Subject: At the top of the canopy is the image of the Christ Child on a cross of radiating light. Below this appear decorative architectural images which are also found on the top of the lancets.

Below this are depicted four stories of Christ as the friend of children, all taken from scriptures:

The top scene is from Matthew 19:13-15 (KJV) --- "Then were brought unto him little children, that he should put his hands on them, and pray: and the disciples rebuked them. But Jesus said, SUFFER LITTLE CHILDREN, AND FORBID THEM NOT TO COME UNTO ME: FOR OF SUCH IS THE KINGDOM OF HEAVEN, And he laid his hands on them, and departed thence." The inscription below this is a commentary of the scene and is Matthew 18:5 (KJV), note the artist has slightly changed the wording to make it applicable to this scene --- "WHOSOEVER SHALL RECEIVE THIS CHILD IN MY NAME RECEIVETH ME."

The scene below this on the left is from Matthew 9:18-26 (KJV) --- "Behold, there came a certain ruler, and worshiped him (Christ), saying, My daughter is even now dead: but come and lay thy hand upon her, and she shall live. ..... And when Jesus came into the ruler's house, and saw the minstrels and people making a noise, He said unto them, Give place: THE MAID IS NOT DEAD, BUT SLEEPETH. And they laughed him to scorn. But when people were put forth, HE WENT IN, AND TOOK HER BY THE HAND, AND THE MAID AROSE."

The scene to the right of this pictures is from Matthew 17:14-20 (KJV) --- "There came to him (Christ) a certain man kneeling down to him and saying, LORD HAVE MERCY ON MY SON: FOR HE IS A LUNATICK ..... And I brought him to thy disciples, and they could not cure him ..... Then Jesus said ..... Bring him to me. AND JESUS REBUKED THE DEVIL; AND HE DEPARTED OUT OF HIM: and the child was cured from that hour."

The bottom scene is from Matthew 18:1-5 (KJV) --- At the same time came disciples unto Jesus, saying, Who is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven? AND JESUS CALLED A LITTLE CHILD unto him, AND SET HIM IN THE MIDST OF THEM, and said, VERILY I SAY UNTO YOU, EXCEPT YE BE CONVERTED, AND BECOME AS LITTLE CHILDREN, YE SHALL NOT ENTER INTO THE KINGDOM OF HEAVEN. Whosoever therefore shall humble himself as this little child, the same is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven.

At the bottom of this window, sandwiched between the lamb with a victory banner (symbol for the Resurrected Christ), and the capital Greek letters Chi, Rho, Iota (first three letters for the Greek word for Christ) are the inscriptions "TO THE GLORY OF GOD" and "IN LOVING MEMORY OF".

Charles J. Connick had signed and dated this window in the bottom right. His records indicated the donor was Mrs. Luella W. Hannah.

The MSGC is a constantly evolving database. Not all the data that has been collected by volunteers has been sorted and entered. Not every building has been completely documented.

All images in the Index are either born-digital photographs of windows or buildings or are scans of slides, prints, or other published sources. These images have been provided by volunteers and the quality of the material varies widely.

If you have any questions, additions or corrections, or think you can provide better images and are willing to share them, please contact donald20@msu.edu
