Building Name: Cathedral of St. Paul

Studio Name: Willet Hauser Architectural Glass

City: Detroit

Window Shape: 3 (arched)

Date of Window: 1965

Subject/Title of Window: St. Titus, St. Paul, St. Timothy

Brief Description of Subject: The clerestory in the nave consists of 12 bays, 6 on each side, and each bay is made up of three lancets. The original intention by the architect and the Church was to have all of the lancets depict saints. At some point the Church abandoned this plan. It is thought that this window might have originally been designed for one of those bays, however in now resides in the narthex.

The common thread of the saints in the window is that St. Titus and St. Timothy were close friends of St. Paul and worked with him on many of his missions.

St Titus is pictured with a book that symbolizes that he preached the "Word of God", and a walking stick that symbolizes a missionary. In the medallion over his head is a miter signifying he became a bishop.

St. Paul is depicting standing on a dock which symbolizes his travels as a missionary. He is holding a book with the inscription "SPIRITUS GLADIUS" which translates to "Sword of the Spirit"; this is from Ephesians 6:17 "... the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God." He is wearing a Medieval letter pouch which symbolizes his epistle writing. The medallion over his head contains a book and a sword which symbolizes he was martyred for preaching the "Word of God". This lancet is signed by the maker on the bottom right corner.

Timothy is pictured carrying a book symbolizing that he preached the "Word of God". The walking stick he is holding as well as the boat in the medallion over his head symbolizes a missionary. The scrolls between his feet refers to the letters he received from St. Paul.

The signature on the window is relatively high up and only the top is visible. The top part of the logo, the angel's head, halo, and wings can be seen. The body is not visible ( triangle) and across the bottom right is a big "W" followed by "(W)illet and the below (W)indows.

The MSGC is a constantly evolving database. Not all the data that has been collected by volunteers has been sorted and entered. Not every building has been completely documented.

All images in the Index are either born-digital photographs of windows or buildings or are scans of slides, prints, or other published sources. These images have been provided by volunteers and the quality of the material varies widely.

If you have any questions, additions or corrections, or think you can provide better images and are willing to share them, please contact donald20@msu.edu
