Building Name: Cathedral of St. Paul

Studio Name: Heaton, Butler & Bayne

City: Detroit

Window Shape: 3 (arched)

Date of Window: 1919

Subject/Title of Window: Annunciation

Brief Description of Subject: The Annunciation is covered in Luke 1:26 -35 (KJV). "And Gabriel was sent by God to a virgin ... and the name of the virgin was Mary. And the angel came unto Mary, and said, HAIL THOU ART HIGHLY FAVORED, THE LORD IS WITH THEE blessed art thou among women." Gabriel then tells her that by the power of the Holy Spirit she shall conceive a son and he shall be called the "Son of God".

At the Archangel Gabriel's feet is a potted lily plant, a symbol for the Annunciation. Above Mary's head is a descending dove, the symbol for the Holy Spirit. The scene shows Mary by a reading table with an open book. This comes from the Gospel of Pseudo-Matthew which says she spent almost all of her time praying and reading the Scriptures.

The window was donated in memory of five members of the Eber Ward Cottrell family.

The MSGC is a constantly evolving database. Not all the data that has been collected by volunteers has been sorted and entered. Not every building has been completely documented.

All images in the Index are either born-digital photographs of windows or buildings or are scans of slides, prints, or other published sources. These images have been provided by volunteers and the quality of the material varies widely.

If you have any questions, additions or corrections, or think you can provide better images and are willing to share them, please contact
