Subject/Title of Window: Gathering Space Windows

Brief Description of Subject: With the merging of the parishes of St. Hugh and St. Frances Cabrini in 2009, the Church of St. Hugh was closed. These windows from St. Hugh were repurposed to St. Frances Cabrini. The design of a stained glass window is constrained by the architecture --- they must be designed to fit in a specific space that will receive a given amount of light. In repurposing a window, its new location most likely, as here, will not match those conditions.
 
The description that follows is for the windows as designed for St. Hugh. Betty MacDowell provided the information from correspondences in 1983 and 1984 between the artist and St. Hugh that apply to these windows:
 
At St. Hugh there were four windows for the entrance doors and sidelights located between the nave and gathering space. The two in the entrance doors formed a fountain of water, while the sidelights are made up of trees and water. The trees were to symbolize humankind, and the fountain of water in the doors was to symbolize that our entrance into church is through baptism.
 
These windows at St. Frances Cabrini are located as they were at St. Hugh --- between the nave and gathering space.
