Subject/Title of Window: The Passion of Christ
Brief Description of Subject: From "Welcome to the Kirk."
Towering over the altar is the Chancel window, portraying the Passion of Christ, as shown forth by Biblical incidents immediately preceding and following the Crucifixion.
In creating this arresting window, the designer (Joseph G. Reynolds) kept in mind the fact that it should be in full color, deep and rich in tone, for it is faced by the congregation. He took special care to make the larger central medallions of the Crucifixion and the Descent from the Cross double-size to insure their being the focal point of the window. Above them are symbols for the sun and moon, representing the text: "Now from the sixth hour there was a darkness over all the land, until the ninth hour. (Matthew 27:45). The angel at the left is holding the letters "IC," while the kneeling angel at the far right is holding the letters "XC" - representing, respectively, the first two and last two letters of the Greek word fo Jesus Christ.
In the tracery openings are six shields on which appear symbols of the Passion. The topmost pair depicts Veronica's veil and the Crown of Thorns. The left-hand pair shows the three nails and the thirty pieces of silver. The right-hand pair portrays the lantern and the scourges. Approximately eleven feet wide and twenty-two feet high, the window also contains four forms of the Cross above the larger lancets - the Anchor Cross, the Chi Rho Cross, the Celtic Cross and the Maltese Cross with its four sets of trifoils. Between the crosses the cherubim are shown with blue wings and the seraphim with red wings.

The MSGC is a constantly evolving database. Not all the data that has been collected by volunteers has been sorted and entered. Not every building has been completely documented.
All images in the Index are either born-digital photographs of windows or buildings or are scans of slides, prints, or other published sources. These images have been provided by volunteers and the quality of the material varies widely.
