Building Name: Chapel of the Holy Trinity - Concordia University

Studio Name: Loire (Gabriel) Studios

City: Ann Arbor

Date of Window: 1966

Subject/Title of Window: Christ the King

Brief Description of Subject: The Chapel of the Holy Trinity is in the shape of a triangle. This window, like the other two at the vertices, will have a reference to the Holy Trinity.

Description of window from unknown writer based on description by the designer of the window, Gabriel Loire:
Christ is shown behind the altar. He is the triumphant Lord clad in the raiment of His kingly, priestly, and prophetic offices. He is the one who ever lives to make intercession for those whom He has redeemed with His blood. In His hand he holds the scroll of the elect, the sum total of those whose names are written in the Book of Life. He stands on the green earth which is His footstool. To the right shine forth the rays of Easter morning rising from the gray gloom of the grave. Higher up stands the victorious Lamb with the seven seals described in the book of Revelation. To the upper left, connecting with the red of the cross that is seen behind the figure of Christ, is the triangle symbolizing the Trinity. The dove shows the Holy Spirit. The Creator's hand reminds us of God the Father. In the lower left is the cup of the Eucharist reminding us of the Lord's Supper. At the extreme left are the fagots, [with the tied branches in the shape of a cross], and the sword, reminiscent of the sacrifice from which Isaac was delivered. The stars point to God's promise to Abraham, the obedient servant of God, that his descendants be as stars of the firmament. At the extreme right is the [budding staff of Aaron] and the brazen serpent from the wilderness wandering of the Israelites, a prophetic type of Christ's death on the cross. Across the bottom of the scene stretch the censers with sweet perfume of the prayers of the saints arising to heaven.

The maker's signature is found at the bottom of the right panel.

The MSGC is a constantly evolving database. Not all the data that has been collected by volunteers has been sorted and entered. Not every building has been completely documented.

All images in the Index are either born-digital photographs of windows or buildings or are scans of slides, prints, or other published sources. These images have been provided by volunteers and the quality of the material varies widely.

If you have any questions, additions or corrections, or think you can provide better images and are willing to share them, please contact donald20@msu.edu
