Subject/Title of Window: Joan of Arc
Brief Description of Subject: The full-length figure of Joan of Arc shows her in medieval mail. Her right hand holds a helmet showing a Christian cross; her left hand holds a lance tipped with a banner (standard) --- she served as the standard bearer in the battles she fought. There are two coat-of arms pictured. The one at the top has a pattern of white crosses and fleurs-de-lis --- associated with France, and one under her foot has a rampant lion on a blue field --- associated with England. The position of the shields probably is meant to symbolize the French victory over the English at the Battle of Orleans during the Hundred Years' War. This was the first battle for Joan of Arc and she became known as the "Maid of Orleans". Although she defeated the English in four battles, she was subsequently captured, tried as witch and a heretic, then burned at the stake in Rouen, France, on May 30, 1431.
The window is located on a stairway in the narthex which leads to a small room on the second floor.
