Subject/Title of Window: Easter and After the Resurrection

Brief Description of Subject: Each of the four geographically east nave windows consist of two panels featuring scenes taken from the life of Christ. They are roughly in chronological order starting with the nearest to the Chancel.

This window's scenes are from Easter Sunday and after the Resurrection. Designed by Eric Sundean, the maker's signature appears at the bottom of each panel.

Left Panel:
Upper Scene: In art, this scene is referred to as "The Three Marys at the Tomb," based on material from Mark 16:1 - 14. On Easter Sunday morning, the three Marys go to the tomb of Jesus to anoint his body with oil but find the tomb empty and an angel that tells them, "Christ has risen."
Middle Scene: Resurrection. This scene is not specifically covered in the Gospels, so artists have wide latitude on how to picture it. This artist has shown the risen Christ, with stigmata, standing on his tomb and carrying the "Victory Over Death" banner.
Lower Scene: Doubting Thomas, found in John 20:26 -29. The risen Christ had appeared to the Apostles when Thomas was not present. He refused to believe that Jesus was alive unless he sees the nail marks and puts his fingers into his side. A week later, Christ again appears to the Apostles, this time with Thomas present. Jesus tells Thomas, "Put your hand into my side, stop doubting and believe."

Right Panel:
Upper Scene: Supper at Emmaus, found in Luke 24:13 - 35. On Easter Sunday, Christ joins two disciples traveling back to their homes in Emmaus. They did not recognize him until they stopped for dinner and Christ took bread, gave thanks, broke it, and gave it to them.
Middle Scene: The Great Commission, found in Matthew: 16 - 20. Before his Ascension, he tells the Apostles that they are to make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. The boat with the mast in the shape of a cross, pictured in this scene, is a symbol for the Christian community.
Lower Scene: Ascension, found in Luke 24: 50 - 51. Christ led his disciples to a place near Bethany, lifting up his hands, he blessed the disciples, and was taken into heaven.

The MSGC is a constantly evolving database. Not all the data that has been collected by volunteers has been sorted and entered. Not every building has been completely documented.

All images in the Index are either born-digital photographs of windows or buildings or are scans of slides, prints, or other published sources. These images have been provided by volunteers and the quality of the material varies widely.

If you have any questions, additions or corrections, or think you can provide better images and are willing to share them, please contact donald20@msu.edu
