Subject/Title of Window: Flight into Egypt/Walk on Water

Brief Description of Subject: Window Description: Top lens contains a shield with the "Glory Cross". the left lens the "Tau Cross" and the right lens a scimitar. The next lens down is the "Escape to Egypt". Mary is sitting on a donkey holding the Christ Child while Joseph is holding the reins. The pyramids appear at the top of the lens. Next lens down is St. Isaac Jogues costumed as a Jesuit with a cross (missionary) and a palm frond (martyred - victory over death). Next lens down is "Walk on Water". Peter is seen sinking in the water and Jesus is reaching out to catch him. At the top of the lens is the rest of the disciples in a boat. The hexagon below contains an eagle with stylized wings -- that is the attribute of John the Evangelist (his gospel is said to soar like an eagle). The lens to the left contains what appears to me a sunflower. Sunflowers always face the sun (Divine light) and thus symbolize  devotion to God. Not sure what type of flower is in the lens to the right.

Background: The Flight to Egypt is covered in Matt 2:13 -15 synopsis After the birth of Jesus an angel appeared to Joseph and told him to take the family to Egypt as Herod would seek to destroy your son. They went to Egypt and stayed until Herod died. St. Isaac Jogues (1607 - 1646) was a Jesuit missionary sent to convert the Indian tribes of North America. He was martyred by the Mohawks and canonized in 1930. "Walk on Water" is covered in Matt. 14: 22 -23 synopsis -- Jesus told his disciples to get in a boat and go to the other side while he went up to pray. High winds arose when the boat was far from shore and Jesus walked on the water to reach them. When Peter saw this he wanted to walk on the water and the Lord said walk to me. Peter began walking on water but then got afraid and began to sink and cried out to the Lord to save him. Jesus reached out to him and admonished him "You of little, why did you doubt me".

The MSGC is a constantly evolving database. Not all the data that has been collected by volunteers has been sorted and entered. Not every building has been completely documented.

All images in the Index are either born-digital photographs of windows or buildings or are scans of slides, prints, or other published sources. These images have been provided by volunteers and the quality of the material varies widely.

If you have any questions, additions or corrections, or think you can provide better images and are willing to share them, please contact donald20@msu.edu
