Building Name: St. Florian Catholic Church

Studio Name: Mayer (Franz) and Company

City: Hamtramck

Window Shape: 3 (arched)

Subject/Title of Window: Good Shepherd

Brief Description of Subject: Description: The top quatrefoil contains the "Sacred Heart of Jesus" - heart with a cross on top and circumscribed with the "Crown of Thorns". The picture shows Christ as a shepherd. Very unusual for a "Good Shepherd" window is that Christ is not alone with the sheep. The one on Jesus's left is John the Evangelist -- Jesus's favorite and almost always shown as a young man. To the right is probably the apostle Peter as he would succeed Christ as the 'Good Shepherd" -- first pope. Bottom quatrefoil contains the initials "IHS" -- letters used to shorten the Greek spelling of "Jesus Christ" --- "IESOUS CHRISTOS".

Note: The Good Shepherd story is covered as a parable in Luke but in John 10:11 -14 Christ proclaims that he is the "Good Shepherd".

The MSGC is a constantly evolving database. Not all the data that has been collected by volunteers has been sorted and entered. Not every building has been completely documented.

All images in the Index are either born-digital photographs of windows or buildings or are scans of slides, prints, or other published sources. These images have been provided by volunteers and the quality of the material varies widely.

If you have any questions, additions or corrections, or think you can provide better images and are willing to share them, please contact donald20@msu.edu
