Building Name: St. Albertus Church

City: Detroit

Window Shape: 4 (rounded or rose window)

Subject/Title of Window: Sorrowful Mary

Brief Description of Subject: The medallion in the center of this rose window features Mary as what artist's call "Mater Dolorosa" which means "Sorrowful Mother". This rendition was inspired by one of the Mater Dolorosa's painted by Carlo Dulci, a 17th Century Italian artist; it features Mary's folded hands under her costume with one finger showing. Surrounding the medallion you will see grapes -- could refer to Mary's title as the "Flourishing Vine".

This window is located on the gospel side of the Chancel, on the opposite side of the Chancel is the "Sorrowful Christ" window. In those window's the color scheme surrounding the medallions are reversed -- blue background for the grapes and red background cusps for Mary while red background for the grapes and blue background for the cusps. Mary is facing right while Christ is facing left thus they are facing each other.

The MSGC is a constantly evolving database. Not all the data that has been collected by volunteers has been sorted and entered. Not every building has been completely documented.

All images in the Index are either born-digital photographs of windows or buildings or are scans of slides, prints, or other published sources. These images have been provided by volunteers and the quality of the material varies widely.

If you have any questions, additions or corrections, or think you can provide better images and are willing to share them, please contact donald20@msu.edu
