Window Shape: 5 (gothic arched, 2 vertical sections)

Subject/Title of Window: Visit of the Magi

Brief Description of Subject: In 1867 some unhappy members of St. Paul left and formed Grace Church, but by 1909, the two parishes agreed to merge into the Cathedral parish. Part of the agreement was to incorporate, among other things, the altar and the "Visit of the Magi" window from Grace Church into the new building. Architecturally the window was not consistent in size or shape with the Cathedral's design. To make it work the window was divided into two parts ---- the rose in the canopy, now the window called "Holy, Holy, Holy, is located next to the Grace side altar while the "Visit of the Magi" is located in the seating space for that side altar.

The scene in the "Visit of the Magi" comes from Matthew 2:9-11 (KJV) "And, lo, the star, which they saw in the east, went before them, till it came and stood over where the young child was. ... And when they were come into the house, they saw the young child with Mary his mother, and fell down, and worshipping: and when they had opened their treasures, they presented unto him; gold, and frankincense, and myrrh.

There is a small rectangular and very light sea-green piece of glass located in the line in the center lancet that separates the scene from the memorial; it is recognizable as it is much brighter that the other pieces that make up that line. This piece of glass was given to Margaret Moore by a student from Oxford who was working with a team of archaeologists on the foundations of the Chapel of St. Augustine in Canterbury. This bit of Roman glass was found in the ruins of the original chapel. It was placed in this window when the window was being repaired in the late 1950's.

The window is a memorial to members of the Tefft and Barbour families --- William H. Tefft, Martha Holbrook Tefft Barbour, Frank H. Tefft, Florine Tefft, Edwin S. Barbour and Frank H. Tefft Barbour.

At the bottom of the left lancet is the signature "Mayer & Co. Munich New York".

The MSGC is a constantly evolving database. Not all the data that has been collected by volunteers has been sorted and entered. Not every building has been completely documented.

All images in the Index are either born-digital photographs of windows or buildings or are scans of slides, prints, or other published sources. These images have been provided by volunteers and the quality of the material varies widely.

If you have any questions, additions or corrections, or think you can provide better images and are willing to share them, please contact donald20@msu.edu
