Subject/Title of Window: Parables of Our Lord

Brief Description of Subject: The canopy of this window is topped with a book that has the inscription "The Word Of God". The book is radiating light which forms a cross. Below this are the four winged beings from Revelation 4:6-8 which have become symbols for the four Evangelists, left to right: head like a human ---Matthew, the lion --- Mark, the ox --- Luke, and the eagle --- John.

Just below the canopy is pictured 5 virgins with lit oil lamps and 5 virgins that have no oil for their lamps --- this references the "Parable of the Wise and Foolish Virgins" which can be found in Matthew 25:1-3.

Below this on the left is the "Parable of the Prodigal Son" which is found in Luke 15:11-32 (KJV). The inscription reads "THIS MY SON WAS DEAD, AND IS ALIVE AGAIN, HE WAS LOST, AND IS FOUND."

To the right of this scene is the "Parable of the LOST SHEEP" which is found in Luke 15:1-6 (KJV). The inscription reads: "REJOICE WITH ME; FOR I HAVE FOUND MY SHEEP WHICH WAS LOST."

Under these two parables is an inscription, here capitalized, that can be found in Matthew 13:34-35 (KJV) --- "All these things spake Jesus unto them in parables, and without a parable spake he not unto them: That it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophet (Psalm 78:2), saying, I WILL OPEN MY MOUTH IN PARABLES; I WILL UTTER THINGS WHICH HAVE BEEN KEPT SECRET FROM THE FOUNDATION OF THE WORLD."

The scene below this on the left is the "Parable of the Sower". The inscriptions, here capitalized, can be found in Matthew 13:1-9 (KJV) --- "the multitude stood on the shore, AND HE SPAKE MANY THINGS UNTO THEM IN PARABLES, saying, Behold, A SOWER WENT FORTH TO SOW."

Under this scene is an inscription, here capitalized, that can be found in Matthew 13:10-16 (KJV) --- "Then the disciples came, and said unto him, Why speakest thou unto them in parables? He answered and said unto them, Because it is given unto you the mysteries of the kingdom of heaven, but to them it is not given. Therefore speak I to them in parables: because they seeing see not, and hearing they hear not .... But BLESSED ARE YOUR EYES, FOR THEY SEE, AND YOUR EARS, FOR THEY HEAR."

The scene to the right is the "Parable of the Good Samaritan" . The inscription, here capitalized, can be found in Luke 10:25-37 (KJV) --- But a certain Samaritan, as he journeyed, came where he was: AND WHEN HE SAW HIM, HE HAD COMPASSION ON HIM."

The scene below this on the left is the "Parable of the Talents" aka "Parable of the Three Servants". The inscriptions, capitalized here, can be found in Matthew 15:14-30 (KJV) --- to each of the two servants that made use of their talents the master said "WELL DONE, GOOD AND FAITHFUL SERVANT", to the servant that made no use of his talents the master said "CAST THE UNPROFITABLE SERVANT INTO OUTER DARKNESS."

The scene to the right of this is the "Parable of the Wedding Feast". The inscriptions, here capitalized, can be found in Matthew 22:1-14 (KJV) --- the king "then saith he to his servants, The wedding is ready, but they which were bidden were not worthy. Go ye therefore into the highway, and as many as ye shall find, bid to the marriage. So these servants went out into the highway and GATHERED TOGETHER AS MANY AS THEY FOUND BOTH BAD AND GOOD. AND THE WEDDING WAS FURNISHED WITH GUESTS."

At the bottom of the window, sandwiching the inscriptions, is a lit candle, a symbol for "Christ is the Light" and an object that might be a water fountain which would symbolize "Christ the Fountain of Life".

Inscriptions: To the greater glory of God and in loving memory of the Hon. Cornelius J. Reilly a vestryman of this Cathedral 1883 to 1913

The MSGC is a constantly evolving database. Not all the data that has been collected by volunteers has been sorted and entered. Not every building has been completely documented.

All images in the Index are either born-digital photographs of windows or buildings or are scans of slides, prints, or other published sources. These images have been provided by volunteers and the quality of the material varies widely.
