Subject/Title of Window: Women Admitted

Brief Description of Subject: Designed by Odell Prather, records the admission of women to Michigan Agricultural College in 1870. Various themes are found in the other windows of the chapel. Fourth in a series of ten on the history of MSU. Depicted are women writing and cooking and family at table. This piece shows women in the dignified roles of the time represented, 1870. The topmost vignette contrasts to the image in the Hope window with a male figure being in the upper position. This only reflects the social order of the times. The bottom scene balances the message of the window with the female figure sitting at a dominant position in the composition. Indeed it seems as if she is at the head of the table. Disputable as that is, it is notable that she is flanked by a framed picture of a female ancestor and a child (girl?) in a high chair, underscoring the continued past and future of the role of women in family and, perhaps by extension, society. Designed by Odell Prather.

The MSGC is a constantly evolving database. Not all the data that has been collected by volunteers has been sorted and entered. Not every building has been completely documented.

All images in the Index are either born-digital photographs of windows or buildings or are scans of slides, prints, or other published sources. These images have been provided by volunteers and the quality of the material varies widely.

If you have any questions, additions or corrections, or think you can provide better images and are willing to share them, please contact donald20@msu.edu
