Brief Description of Subject: Persons who enter the Sanctuary of the First United Methodist Church of Jackson, Michigan, will note, not only the altar and choir areas, but also the impressively tall windows which line the east and west sides of the nave. Matching design, but differing in placement of the colored glass within each window, these arched structures seem to point to heaven. They soar almost two stories in height, the lower portion visible below the balcony and the upper portion above. Lower portions of each window are composed basically of rectangles of translucent glass with pastel inserts distributed in random fashion. In the upper portions, irregular-shaped, jewel-tones of color become intensified. Rich tones of amethyst, emerald, sapphire, orange, and gold delight the eye. Each window is edged by a wooden frame, enclosing a narrow border of pastel-toned stained glass. A wooden overlay bisects it into two equal, vertical, elongated sections which resemble a jeweled crown. The crowns are further enhanced by a large stylized teardrop design at the peak. In each of the windows, one color is emphasized strongly within the teardrop, an impressive crown jewel. The glass used in constructing this work of art is encased in lead cames, supported by sturdy wooden frames, pleasingly styled to blend with the Gothic architecture of the building. A plaque at the base of each window indicates its memorial to persons who were active and devoted workers in the life of this church when it was dedicated in 1922.

The MSGC is a constantly evolving database. Not all the data that has been collected by volunteers has been sorted and entered. Not every building has been completely documented.

All images in the Index are either born-digital photographs of windows or buildings or are scans of slides, prints, or other published sources. These images have been provided by volunteers and the quality of the material varies widely.
