Building Name: North Park Reformed ChurchCity: Kalamazoo
Window Shape: 2 (rectangle)
Date of Window: 1965
Subject/Title of Window: He Descended into Hell
Brief Description of Subject: One of a set of ten rectangular windows depicting the Life of Christ after the Apostles' Creed. This one is "He Descended into Hell" and depicts a blood-red cross being struck by lightning. [Many Protestants reject this line of the creed entirely. Some of those who do accept it interpret it as simply meaning that He died. Others believe that it refers to Our Lord's agony during His Passion, which Calvin held, and which seems to be the interpretation adopted here. Still other Protestants hold to the ancient tradition of the Catholic Church, that Jesus descended into Hell in triumph to bring the souls of the just from Limbo into Paradise.] Made by John Vanderburgh, of Vanderburgh Art Studios, Zeeland, MI. We recevied two forms, only one of which indicates that these windows were made with enamel paint.
Condition of Window: excellent
Height: 40 in
Width: 170 in
Type of Glass and Technique: Antique or Cathedral Glass, Enamel Paint, Lead Came
Cross and Lightning
The MSGC is a constantly evolving database. Not all the data that has been collected by volunteers has been sorted and entered. Not every building has been completely documented.
All images in the Index are either born-digital photographs of windows or buildings or are scans of slides, prints, or other published sources. These images have been provided by volunteers and the quality of the material varies widely.
