Subject/Title of Window: St. Dominic

Brief Description of Subject: St. Dominic was the founder of the Dominican Order, the Order of Preachers. The Order was founded to combat heresy and its members were noted for their great learning and effective preaching. The book in his hand symbolizes knowledge and the lily, purity. There is a black dog at his feet holding a torch in its mouth. This comes from a legend that when Dominic’s mother was carrying him she had a dream in which a black dog carrying a torch ignited the surrounding countryside. This fire symbolized the spread of the gospel which Dominic preached. The window is dedicated to the Sisters of St. Dominic. The Dominican Sisters of Grand Rapids have served St. Joseph Parish since 1882.
