Building Name: Alumni Memorial Chapel

Studio Name: Willet Hauser Architectural Glass

City: East Lansing

Window Shape: 2 (rectangle)

Date of Window: 1959

Subject/Title of Window: Truth

Brief Description of Subject: One in a set of three windows located on the East wall of Nave. Truth is symbolized by the circulus vitiosus and around it the shining sun. The oval with zig-zag design is the oriental symbol of Eternity. At the bottom of the window is the suffering earth in chain and barbed wire bondage. The truth, in lightning form breaks and liberates itself from its bondages. Symbols are the truth of art (Lyre), Science (book and lamp), mortality (the balance) and the victory of truth. Most windows in the Alumni Memorial Chapel are sets of three on the same general topic with the same donor. This window is grouped with Wisdom (L3b) and Beauty (L3c). The topmost figure in this piece can be readily interpreted to be the all-seeing eye of God, discerning truth and in a supreme position in the composition to all the other elements. It is an indication of the artist’s sense of humor as well as his mastery of symbology that he has placed a hand held mirror where the pupil of the eye would be; a message to the viewer about how He/he (God or the viewer) sees truth. Designed by Anthony Mako.

The MSGC is a constantly evolving database. Not all the data that has been collected by volunteers has been sorted and entered. Not every building has been completely documented.

All images in the Index are either born-digital photographs of windows or buildings or are scans of slides, prints, or other published sources. These images have been provided by volunteers and the quality of the material varies widely.
