Brief Description of Subject: The three Chancel Windows are known as the “Covenant Windows”. Each piece of glass was individually painted, with each piece joined to the others by leaded tracery. These three windows are referred to as Medieval stained glass, made in the tradition of the old Gothic design. The central theme of the Scriptures is the covenant. In the Old Testament, the covenant between man and God not only defined Israel’s relationship to its God, but it established the unity of the tribes. In the New Testament we have the “new covenant” representing man’s relationship to Christ.

At the top of the left window is an image of Abraham on a starry night, with the passage “Look toward heaven and number the stars” (Genesis 15:5).

Next is an image of Moses. Moses has the tablets of stone in his hand, upon which were inscribed the Ten Command-ments. Also, there is an image of the pillar of fire and the cloud which guided the children of Israel. Underneath is the statement “I also established my covenant with them”. So we have the Abrahamic covenant and the Mosaic covenant.

Underneath Moses is a picture of water flowing out of a rock, which was one of the miracles performed in the wilderness.

Immediately beneath that is an image of either King David or the high priest in front of the ark of the covenant, with the passage “Would you build me a house to dwell in?” (2 Samuel 7:5) The symbol underneath is a sign of the Trinity.

At the bottom of the window is an image of Jeremiah as a young man with the hand of God pointing down to him with the passage “Do not say I am only a youth" (Jeremiah 1:7). There is an image of a pot on a fire, an almond blossom and a dove, the symbol of the Holy Spirit. Finally there is the date 1853, the year when this church was established.

The MSGC is a constantly evolving database. Not all the data that has been collected by volunteers has been sorted and entered. Not every building has been completely documented.

All images in the Index are either born-digital photographs of windows or buildings or are scans of slides, prints, or other published sources. These images have been provided by volunteers and the quality of the material varies widely.
