Subject/Title of Window: The Blue Christ

Brief Description of Subject: The Blue Christ window is located in the lower level. It is situated in an alcove adjacent to one that has a Red Christ window. The windows are essentially identical except for the colors of Christ's costume and the border. The Red Christ has a bit more detailing in the clouds.

Christ has two natures, a human and divine. He is costumed here in blue, the color of royalty, symbolizing his divine nature. He is seen here in an orans pose. This pose for Christ has its origin in Leviticus 9:22, "Aaron [the first high priest] lifted up his hands toward the people, and blessed them.

The clouds symbolize divine presence. This comes from Exodus 13:21, "And the Lord went before them by day in a pillar of cloud to lead the way." The two pillars of fire at the top come from the remainder of that quote in Exodus, "and by night in a pillar of fire." The blue background represents heaven, since traditionally, heaven is up towards the sky which is blue.

The MSGC is a constantly evolving database. Not all the data that has been collected by volunteers has been sorted and entered. Not every building has been completely documented.

All images in the Index are either born-digital photographs of windows or buildings or are scans of slides, prints, or other published sources. These images have been provided by volunteers and the quality of the material varies widely.

If you have any questions, additions or corrections, or think you can provide better images and are willing to share them, please contact donald20@msu.edu
