Subject/Title of Window: Mark the Evangelist

Brief Description of Subject: Second of seven panels by Dirk Thompson III that are designed to let light into the choir loft and to be consistent in design with the nave windows.

The medallion in the center uses the main attribute for the gospel writer Mark -- a winged lion. This symbol comes from Ezekiel 1: 5-14 where there appears a creature with 4 wings and four faces -- a human, an ox, a lion, and an eagle; likewise in Rev. 4:5-8 four living winged creatures surround the throne -- a human, an ox, a lion and an eagle. Early Christianity matched these with the four Evangelists. Mark became the WINGED LION most likely because his gospel begins with a quote from Isaiah about the "voice of one crying in the wilderness" and this sounds like the roar of a lion.
