Subject/Title of Window: Cause of Our Joy

Brief Description of Subject: This clerestory window is one of 17 windows illuminating titles for the Virgin Mary found in the Litany of Loreto. The title pictured here is "Cause of Our Joy"
Pictured is an oasis consisting of a well and a date palm tree. The sight of an oasis is a cause of joy for the desert traveler as it is a source of precious water and nourishment.
The title "Cause of Our Joy" comes from the Old Testament. The Israelites had been conquered, their Temple (place where God resided) destroyed, and many were exiled to Babylon. Eventually they returned and the reconstruction of the Temple was a cause of their joy, Ezra 5:16. Christ resided in Mary's womb (temple) for nine months and as she gave birth to the Savior, she is fittingly given the title "Cause of Our Joy."

The MSGC is a constantly evolving database. Not all the data that has been collected by volunteers has been sorted and entered. Not every building has been completely documented.

All images in the Index are either born-digital photographs of windows or buildings or are scans of slides, prints, or other published sources. These images have been provided by volunteers and the quality of the material varies widely.
