Subject/Title of Window: The Flight into Egypt

Brief Description of Subject: The grisaille glass in the upper part of the window is original to the window, and at one time, extended to the bottom. In their book "Detroit's Historic Places of Worship", Collum, Krueger, and Kostuch, thought the maker was likely Friederichs and Staffin (Detroit Stained Glass Works). In the canopy, the roundel features a helmet --- in putting on the armor of God, "take the helmet of salvation" (Ephesians 6:17 KJV).

The original grisaille glass in the lower portion of this window was replaced in 1957 by the scene of the Holy Family's flight into Egypt.

When Herod was unable to find the future King of the Jews, that was born in Bethlehem. he decreed that all males under the age of two be killed. An angel appeared to Joseph in a dream and told him:

"Arise and take the young child and his mother, and flee into Egypt, and be there until I bring thee word: for Herod will seek the young child to destroy him. When he arose, he took the young child and his mother by night, and departed to Egypt." (Matthew 2:13 - 14 KJV)

Red roses, symbols of sacrifice, are seen above the inscription. In the shield above Mary is the "Creator's Star" --- the six points of the star represent the six days of creation. In the shield above Joseph is the "Eye of God" watching over humanity. It is inside an equilateral triangle symbolizing the Trinity. The stars around Mary's head comes from the woman (Mary) in Revelation 12:1 "Upon her head a crown of 12 stars."

The MSGC is a constantly evolving database. Not all the data that has been collected by volunteers has been sorted and entered. Not every building has been completely documented.

All images in the Index are either born-digital photographs of windows or buildings or are scans of slides, prints, or other published sources. These images have been provided by volunteers and the quality of the material varies widely.

If you have any questions, additions or corrections, or think you can provide better images and are willing to share them, please contact donald20@msu.edu
