Window

Building Name: St. John's Episcopal Church

Studio Name: Gorham Company

City: Detroit

Window Shape: 5 (gothic arched, 2 vertical sections)

Date of Window: 1913

Subject/Title of Window: The Epiphany

Brief Description of Subject: The grisaille glass in the upper part of the window is original to the window and, at one time, extended all the way to the bottom. In the book "Detroit's Historic Places of Worship" by Collum, Kruger and Kostuch, they thought the maker was likely to be Friederichs and Staffin (Detroit Stained Glass Works). The roundel in the center of the quatrefoil pictures a lily plant --- a symbol of purity.

The original grisaille glass in the lower portion of the window was replaced in 1913 with a figural scene, the Epiphany, made by Gorham Studios.

Description of the lower portion of the window from "A Guide to St. John's Episcopal Church" by Charles Griner:

"The artistry in this window is fully descriptive of the Biblical text (Matthew 2:1 - 12). The star has led the three wise men to the manger at Bethlehem where they kneel in adoration and present gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh. The window also symbolizes the manifestation of Christ to the Gentiles. The inscribed text, "And the Gentiles shall come to Thy light and Kings to the brightness of Thy rising" (Isaiah 60: 1 - 3), also explains why we know the Epiphany as the "Feast of Light". Erected by the Leonard Family and inscribed "In loving memory of Theodore Otis Leonard + 1910", it worthily commemorates a pioneer communicant of the parish."

The MSGC is a constantly evolving database. Not all the data that has been collected by volunteers has been sorted and entered. Not every building has been completely documented.

All images in the Index are either born-digital photographs of windows or buildings or are scans of slides, prints, or other published sources. These images have been provided by volunteers and the quality of the material varies widely.

If you have any questions, additions or corrections, or think you can provide better images and are willing to share them, please contact donald20@msu.edu
