Subject/Title of Window: Ship

Brief Description of Subject: From the earliest centuries of Christianity, the ship has been a symbol for the Church, tossed about by stormy seas yet still reaching its destination - a ship on the sea of life. The ship image recalls also the story of Jesus stilling the storm on the Sea of Galilee. (Matthew 8:23ff; Mark 4:35-41; Luke 8:22-25) The nave of a church can be imagined as the hull of a ship in which the congregation gathers; the word "nave" is rooted in the Latin word navis meaning "ship."

Contributors to the cost of the windows include Henricka Beach, Mr. and Mrs. Herm Deal, Athalia M. Demski, Mr. and Mrs. Wilbur Elliot, Mrs. Leonard Goodsell, Dr. and Mrs. Hans Gygi, Mr. and Mrs. Doug Sherman, Mr. and Mrs. Lowell Tomkins and Mr. and Mrs. Marniv VanEyck.

The MSGC is a constantly evolving database. Not all the data that has been collected by volunteers has been sorted and entered. Not every building has been completely documented.

All images in the Index are either born-digital photographs of windows or buildings or are scans of slides, prints, or other published sources. These images have been provided by volunteers and the quality of the material varies widely.

If you have any questions, additions or corrections, or think you can provide better images and are willing to share them, please contact donald20@msu.edu
