Brief Description of Subject: Mark is pictured as a winged lion, as king of beasts, representing the royal character of Jesus. St. Matthew-since this Gospel dwelt more on the human side of Jesus Christ than the other evangelists, Matthew is usually portrayed symbolically as a winged man.
